Hospitality
Accommodation Options:
- Single bedroom flats in a duplex arrangment with en suite showers/ toilets and a shared kitchen. The kitchen is stocked with necessary tools for cooking and eating. Each flat has a small refrigerator and a 2 plate cooker. Those staying in the flats can self-cater.
- Dormitory with 9 rooms (2 bunk beds per room); toilets and showers are communal and gender specific. Also in the dorm is a TV lounge and a "tea room" with a refrigerator, microwave, and electric tea kettle. There is no provision in the dorm for meal preparation, only light snacks.
Amenities:
Provided in Flats and Dorm - all bed and bath linens; mosquito nets; toilet tissues; laundering of bed and bath linens (but not daily).Note: personal laundry is the responsibility of the individual including providing his/her own laundry soap. Both dorm and flats have a laundry sink for doing hand laundry. Guests can arrange for the housekeeping staff to do personal laundry for an extra charge (this includes soap).
Food Options:
- Cafeteria next to dorm- serves meals to those who sign up and buy meal tickets at least 24 hours in advance. Note regarding cafeteria meals- food is acquired locally and what is not found locally comes from a distance. Special diets are not easily accommodated. Guests following any special diets who plan to eat in the cafeteria should expect to accept responsibility for some of their own nutritional needs.
- Hospital Restaurant (behind the hospital)- serves mostly traditional local fare; also sells bread, buns, muffins, cake, tea and cool drinks. Pizza is the newest item on the menu. All meals (incl pizza) must be ordered in advance.
- Vision Restaurant - has a varied menu of traditional and western choices. It is located about 2 km from the hospital center and you should order in advance.
- Local shops and market stalls sell a variety of snack items, eggs, buns, milk, and fresh fruits and vegetables in season.
- Grocery stores in Choma (the nearest town 70 km from Macha) - transportation to town is available daily Mon - Fri.
Charges:
All MIAM accommodation and meal charges must be paid in cash - either Zambian Kwacha or USD. You should arrive prepared to pay your full accommodation charges. Accommodation charges are per person and vary according to the guest's category (student, faculty, church worker etc). Quotes will be given on request.
Meal tickets for the cafeteria can be purchased as you go but in advance of the meals you will sign up for. Currently the charge for lunches and suppers is K35,000 per meal. Breakfast is K15,000 for anyone not staying in the dorm - for dorm residents it is included in the accommodation charges.
